The Mediterranean Steps create a beautiful and challenging yet exciting hike all! The Mediterranean Steps were created by the military several decades ago as part of a system of communication that would run between two defence points with in Gibraltar. There is still much evidence of a military presence throughout the trek; and you will see buildings and gun placements dating back to the Second World War. There are also some aspects of the steps that are prehistoric in nature as well as natural sites that also appear on the steps.
The Mediterranean Steps are located on the Eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar. The steps begin at an altitude of 180 metres and finishes at an altitude of 426 metres at O’Hara’s Battery which is the highest point on the Rock, where you will be surprised to find two 9.2 Inch guns. The steps are at times steep and often uneven and are actually a flight of stairs that have been cut from the limestone from the Rock of Gibraltar. The sheer height and breath taking views will leave you amazed; it is easy to see why so many choose to scale the heights of the Mediterranean Steps. You will also have a chance to see the stunning flora and fauna that Gibraltar has to offer on this hike!
